  • The inside of the Long Shan Temple with all the lampoons lit

Relive History at Long Shan Temple and Let a Bird Tell Your Fortune

The temple is a fusion of modernity and tradition. It was built during the 5th Year of the Qing Dynasty, and thus, it’s the perfect place to relive the ancient history.

But one of the most interesting things to do at the temple is to have a bird tell your fortune. You'll see birds hopping along the tables choosing from the various picture cards that will indicate one's luck. You can also give it a try if you want to experience something different from the usual things to do in Taipei. Great introduction to Taiwan

"I joined the walking tour “Highlights and Hidden Gems of Taipei” with Garen, and it was an excellent experience. Garen showed me many of Taipei’s highlights while sharing fascinating stories about the markets, temples, and the history of Taiwan. She also gave thoughtful insight into the political situation and everyday life of people living here, which made the tour feel very authentic and meaningful. We explored everything from the small streets and local atmosphere of the markets to the impressive parks and the grand Chiang Kai-shek Memorial. It was a perfect balance of history, culture, and local perspective. Garen is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and engaging guide, and she made the entire experience both enjoyable and memorable. I highly recommend taking a tour with Garen. Thank you again for a wonderful introduction to Taipei!"

    Highly recommending Garen

"Just finished the 5 hr walking tour with Garen. She is punctual, knowledgeable, pleasant, and truly catered to my desires on learning about Taipei! I booked the tour when I was still in the states, Garen responded quickly and reached out to me on WhatsApp. There she asked me about what I was interested in. I was interested in the history, culture, and specifically street food. She quickly proposed a plan that made me excited for the trip. In our 5 hours tour, I learned so much about Taiwan, way more in depth than what I learned in American and Chinese history classes. Food recommendations were just spot on, too! Everything was what I hoped for! Garen is polite, knowledgeable, fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and English. She is also very courteous - knowing 5 hours is a long period of time walking, she made sure to offer every opportunity to use the bathroom, getting water, etc. and of course, she made sure I was comfortable asking questions and requesting time to stop at the souvenir stop. She made me felt welcome as a foreigner, really got to be with the locals, and I left with a full belly despite some restaurants/venders being closed for Chinese new year. My experience with Garen was exceptional, highly recommend her as your tour guide of the rich city of Taipei! "

    Garen Rocks Teipei!

"Two tours on successive days with Garen were simply outstanding! She is endearing, smart, fun and completely dedicated to guiding guests to the best of Taipei. Day one was a food tour in the Dongmen/Daan area that included numerous fantastic tastes with intriguing historical facts of this island nation. This touched on Chinese/Japanese history since those cultures highly influenced Taipei’s past. Day two was focused on history in and around the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and finished with an informative walk through a local bustling market in the midst of preparing for the Chinese New Year. Garen has done her homework—she explains the “how” and “why” of topics at hand to create a truly unique experience in all regards. Thanks for making our trip a great one Garen!"

Real local food, not tourist traps.

"We had an absolutely wonderful walking food tour with Garen! From the moment we met her, her energy was warm, welcoming, and contagious. She took us to markets and food spots that felt truly local — places we never would have discovered on our own. Every stop came with great stories and insights, making the experience both delicious and informative. Garen was incredibly friendly and polite, and my kids especially enjoyed her company. She was so patient, happy to answer all our questions, and even offered to take photos for our family — which we really appreciated. Communication before and after the tour was excellent; she was responsive, helpful, and full of useful tips. This tour became one of the highlights of our Taiwan trip. If we’re lucky enough to visit Taiwan again, we would absolutely book another tour with Garen without hesitation. Highly recommended!"

Felt like hanging with an old friend

"Eva did an amazing job maximizing our layover in Taipei. We only had about 8 hours to kill, and we left feeling unrushed and full of new knowledge (and, of course a lot of tasty food). She reached out to plan the details of the trip with us as soon as we booked, and did a great job tailoring the location and dishes around our list of preferences. Our tour started at Longshan Temple station, which was pretty easy to get to by train from the airport. Without needing to leave the neighborhood we got to try a bunch of cute little mom and pop style shops that all specialized in one or two delicious dishes. Everything we tried was kind of familiar to various Chinese food that we've tried before, but with really interesting and delicious adjustments that were new to us. We tried a really good scallion pancake (Cong Zhua Bing) that was crispy on the outside and doughy on the inside. The wild boar sausage wrapped in sticky rice (Da Chang Bao Xiao Chang) is going to be noticeably absent from my life now that I know it exists. My wife was all about the radish cake (luo bo gao) with its big flavor and squishy texture. There was also a night market (relatively chill vibe compared to the hustle and bustle of markets in places like Bangkok), some cool historic buildings, and of course Longshan Temple itself which is beautiful and full of locals making offerings. Everything was flat and walkable. The bathrooms at Longshan Temple were nice, and there were plenty of opportunities to grab a bottle of water and a souvenir or two (having a local with you helps that cause). Eva was incredibly knowledgeable about the food, the city, and the history of Taiwan in general. She took care of all the transactions for us and made us feel like guests visiting her. It was just us and her, so we didn't have that dorky tour group feeling as we walked around. We came knowing next to nothing about Taipei and left feeling grateful for a layover for the first time.
