Our guide, Agatha, is a passionate local, who effortlessly blended history, tradition, and humor, making each stop feel like a story unfolding. The fresh fruit and marinated olives were a perfect opener, bursting with Mediterranean sunshine. Then came the sun-dried tomatoes—intensely rich and perfectly chewy—followed by a descent into a hidden lava cave that gave us a breathtaking glimpse into Catania’s volcanic roots. The food got bolder and more unforgettable with every bite. The horse meatballs were tender and surprisingly delicate, while the grilled spring onion wrapped in bacon was smoky, sweet, and utterly addictive. The rice ball filled with donkey meat and pistachios was the most unexpected delight of the day—comforting yet complex, and deeply Sicilian. We ended with a refreshing grenadine paired with soft brioche, the perfect sweet note to close the tour. Throughout, the conversations with locals brought an authenticity that no guidebook could offer. Their stories, traditions, and pride in their cuisine gave every bite deeper meaning. "Giuseppe is a fantastic host, with excellent knowledge of the city and the best places to eat authentically! We had a large group (9) and he was incredibly accommodating and ensured those of us with allergies were also catered for. He was friendly, good humoured and fitted in perfectly. We enjoyed a lengthy lunch together after the tour, which was a bonus! We cannot recommend this experience, and Giuseppe, enough. Catania was our last stop in a month-long trip in Sicily: we had sampled plenty of street food, but we we knew we needed someone local to help us find the best and to give us insight into what makes Catania and its people unique. Agata was perfect for the job: she knows everyone and everyone knows her. We met fishermen and fish mongers as well as ooing and ahhing over the variety of fish; sampled the best arancini at the Antica (1910) Rosticceria Catanese; learned the interesting history of sarde a beccafico while snacking on it at Scirocco; ate carne di cavallo and washed it down with selz, limone e sale. Agata helped us better understand and see first hand how young Catanese chefs are bringing new energy and enthusiasm for their city's amazing street food. She was flexible in scheduling an early start ( critical with the heat ! ) Maria was able to provide relevant context to Catania’s historical highlights as we walked the streets and were able to see first hand, buildings, ruins, churches and castles.
