Anna also had remembered a comment I had made about visiting a coffee shop in Helsinki (since the city is known for their cafes and love for coffee), and thus promptly took me to two popular cafes towards the end of my tour. As we walked, she shared clear, useful context on Swedish and Russian influence, Finland’s path to independence, and how those histories still show up in Helsinki today, along with thoughtful observations about where the city and country seem to be headed. It never felt scripted; more like a smart, ongoing conversation with a friend.
We saw major sites like Helsinki Cathedral, Senate Square, and Uspenski Cathedral, but the Central Library was a real highlight, both architecturally and as an example of how much Finland invests in public, shared spaces and its people. The hidden gems were genuinely fun, such as Art Nouveau buildings with animals and trolls, a former bank turned coffee shop, and small local stops we never would have found on our own.
