Here’s an overview of your tour

The Street Photography Workshop Tour of Bologna is meant to be both an introduction to the city and to the art of Photography. During the 3 hours tour we will visit two of the most beautiful neighborhoods of Bologna, that almost look like two villages inside the city, which are the Old Jewish Ghetto and Pratello. I will give some basic knowledge and insights about the history of Bologna in general and about this specific areas of the city. For what concerns photography, it doesn’t matter if you are a beginner, an amateur or a pro, and no professional equipment is required, a simple last generation Smartphone will be enough, or those that like film photography could bring some of their vintage cameras. What is important is to spend some enjoyable time together walking around the little streets of Bologna and some of the main big squares. From a photographic point of view I will explain some principles about framing, light, contrast and subjects, but my main principle on photography is “Look around you, and try to keep attention on what catches your eye, and then immortalize it”. Every picture has a story to tell, so what we are gonna do is basically to discover some stories around Bologna.

I’m myself an amateur photographer since the age of 15, so I’ve been taking pictures for the half of my life. I started using an old Nikkormat film camera from 1978, using it during my trips abroad, like in India or Turkey, or also around Europe. Film photography is certainly a good starting point to photography because of the attention you have to give for each shutter click. It teaches you also to be patient, sometimes you will see the result and the images only after a long time. I started also making digital photography in recent years becoming a freelance photographer and videomaker. My style is certainly close to what is called Street Photography, I love to walk around cities or villages discovering places and people.

What inspires me to do my own Photographic tours is that I see it as a moving collective performance. We will be sharing a moment, covering the same places and the same moments, but what photography does is to objectify our relative and different vision that we have on the same reality, which makes it very interesting. That’s why I will make available on some digital platforms the photographic results of each tour. The best photos may become part of an exhibition.

Each tour will cover some of the main spots, like the Jewish Ghetto and the Pratello Neighborhood, but the way from one spot to the other may change according to our own feelings and mood during the tour, because photography certainly needs a certain amount of freedom and improvisation.

We will also have a coffee break and a snack along the road.

Your itinerary

  • Meeting point

    Piazza San Martino
  • Meeting at Piazza S.Martino

This will be the Meeting Point for our Street Photography Tour, where I will give you some basic tips and insights about the art of photography. From there we will pass through one of the 3 historical entrances of the Old Jewish Ghetto.
  • The Old Jewish Ghetto of Bologna

For around half an hour we will walk through the little streets of the Old Jewish Ghetto, I will tell you a bit of the history of this place and in the meantime we will start putting into practice our photographic approach.
  • The Two Towers

Getting out of the Ghetto we will continue our tour briefly stopping in front of the Two Towers, one of the most important monuments of the City of Bologna, and another good spot to catch some interesting photos.
  • Coffee Break at Bar la Linea

From the Two Towers we will walk toward Piazza Maggiore, the biggest square of Bologna, where the historical Palazzo Renzo takes place, and we will have a Coffee break in the famous and intellectual Bar La Linea.
  • Exploring the Piazza Maggiore Square

Piazza Maggiore is a perfect place to explore. After the narrow streets of the Ghetto this square stands out for its largeness and openness. It has also always been one of the principal meeting places for the citizens of Bologna, where different activities take place, like political debates, music performances, protests, etc., so we will have the chance to find many interesting subjects for our pictures.
  • The Pratello Neighborhood

From Piazza Maggiore we will slowly walk to the Pratello Neighborhood. Pratello is really like a village inside the city, it has it's own social life, people, bars, and has always been a reference in the city for cultural life. Walking through this neighborhood we will be visiting the Piazza S.Francesco with its beautiful Cathedral, and have a look at the bars and libraries around.
  • Street Food Snack

We will end our Street Photography Tour by having one of the many kind of Street Food Snacks you find in Pratello, we will also have time to see and share our photos and discuss some of them or the ideas that we got from our tour.
