Things to do in Eindhoven

Never a boring moment in Eindhoven! There is always something going on in this fast-growing city. There are several popular local activities which you can experience: a food tour to discover both local and international delicacies, the exploration of a hip industrial neighbourhood, a bike tour spotting the most characteristics corners of Eindhoven, ice skating in the Eindhoven Markt when the season kicks in. Besides, there are always different festivals, exhibitions, and local markets going on!

  • A view on the terrace at 't Ketelhuis at Strijp S in Eindhoven

    Explore Eindhoven hip districts

One thing that you will love about Eindhoven is its vibrant scene, especially in the post-industrial neighbourhood of Strijp-S. Locals in Eindhoven will guide you through this melting pot of artsy shops, galleries, restaurants, and bars and point you in the right direction to get the most out of it.

Discover the fascinating stories behind each building while strolling under some pipelines or through a containers’ village, taste some delicious Dutch beer in a quirky brewery, chase the bunnies in one of the most beautiful green areas of Eindhoven.

Local tipCheck out upcoming district Sectie-C for local artisan work, expositions and (beer) festivals

  • Taste the herring the local way

One of the most popular delicacies in The Netherlands is herring and if you really want to go local you should taste it the ‘Dutch way’! That is raw, and with lots of onions to get the real taste out. Fresh and salty, the best way to eat it is by holding the slippery fish tail, cocking your head back to a slightly uncomfortable angle and take one large bite.

Skeptical about the technique? Curious to know where to get the freshest, tastiest herring in Eindhoven? Let a local show you the way!

Local tipGet your herring fresh at the weekly market on Tuesdays or Saturdays - alternatively you can get herring at SeaBas the urban fisher.

  • A waiter serving food to a group of tourists and a local guide in a restaurant in Eindhoven

Discover the local food scene with a foodie

The Netherlands is a melting pot of cultures and this reflects in its diverse cuisine. Also in Eindhoven the food scene is thriving and many hip restaurants, bars and delicatessen shops: Indonesian, Brabant, Italian, Surinamese. There is something to suit everyone’s fancy!

But what are actually the must-visit food places in Eindhoven? Only the real local foodies know! From a delicious espresso in a hidden coffee place to a tasty bite of fresh herring, you will be surprised of how much Eindhoven has to offer when it comes to yummy food.

Local tipFeeling a bit lost in Eindhoven? No worries! Head over to Dommelstraat or De Kleine Berg – these spots are packed with awesome restaurants all within arm's reach. Or, if you're up for something cool, hit up the Down Town Gourmet Market where a bunch of top-notch restaurants gather under one roof!

  • A view on the Inkijkmuseum in Eindhoven

Visit a one-of-a-kind house museum in the heart of Eindhoven

There are several museums you can visit in Eindhoven, whether you are interested in the history of the city, in modern art or in cars and trucks. The offer is broad and it is a good option to consider if the weather outside is not that nice. But if you are curious to get a truly local and memorable experience you should definitely pay a visit to the unique Inkijkmuseum, located in a sweet old white house in the city center. Our host Martin is the founder and knows by heart each and every anecdote behind the countless paintings decorating his very house! Join him for a cup of coffee and bring home with you a unique memory and many unforgettable stories.

  • A view on the Blob in Eindhoven

Get the most out of the Dutch Design Week

Whether you're new in town, just passing through or a local, you will be sure to find a festival going on in Eindhoven or somewhere close-by. All year long the city hosts numerous festivals rich in art, music and design. Our recommendation: The Dutch Design Week, aka DDW, which takes place every year in the last week of October all over the city!

Eindhoven’s industrial character and its deeply innovative nature make it the perfect setting for hosting this event, which animates some of the most hip places around with countless events. From the Klokgebouw to the non-commercial expo space Onomatopee, discover what is hot on the scene and see what the trending designers worldwide are working on.

Local tipThe event offers various modes of transport to hop from place to place all over the city. Or alternatively rent an OV-bike at the train station of just a couple of euros.

  • Cheers to Eindhoven's Craft Beer Delights

Calling all beer enthusiasts! Eindhoven isn't just a tech hub – it's a paradise for beer lovers too. Whether you're a connoisseur or just looking for a good time, Eindhoven's beer culture is worth raising a glass to.

Start your beer journey at local breweries like 100 Watt Stadbrouwerij, Van Moll, Oldskool(Drinkers Pub), Brouwerij 't Veem, and Rabauw. These gems offer a range of flavors and styles that'll satisfy even the most discerning palate. But that's not all – at Drinkers Pub, the beer selection is nothing short of mind-blowing. With around 1000 beers to choose from, you'll find yourself in hop heaven.

And let's not forget the festivals that make Eindhoven a beer utopia. Van Moll Fest and Beer & Big are just a couple of the many events that celebrate the city's hoppy spirit. So, whether you're sipping a locally crafted brew, exploring a wide array of options, or celebrating at a beer festival, Eindhoven's beer scene is a local tip you won't want to miss. Raise your glass to the perfect pour and let the city's beer culture be your ultimate guide to an unforgettable time!

It is called Kazerne and it is at the same time a design gallery, a shop, an innovation lab and a top-notch restaurant.

It is located in a central area of town, and it owes its name to the fact that the location was once an ensemble of military barracks (Kazerne in Dutch). During the Dutch Design Week it is one of the hot spot that you do not want to miss, but all year around you will find something going on.

A local passionate about design and history is what you should go for if you want to explore this space and many others that Eindhoven has to offer.

  • A group of tourists enjoying an Indonesian home dinner in Eindhoven

Enjoy an authentic Indonesian home dinner

The Netherlands was once a colonial super power and Indonesia was one of the territories under its administration, known by the name “Dutch East Indies”. The first expedition set sail already in 1595 with the am of gaining access to precious spices directly in Asia.

This colonial past resulted in the migration to Europe of many Indonesians, who brought with them their culture. The Indonesian culinary tradition is widely appreciated and well established in the Netherlands and also Eindhoven has some real tidbits to offer. On top of the list is an authentic home dinner hosted by an Indonesian foodie and home chef, who settled in Eindhoven and can give you a good introduction to both the Dutch way of living and the Indonesian traditions!

Local tipDon't have the ability to join a home dinner? Bali restaurant is a great alternative.

    Admire GLOW's thousand lights

November is coming up and so it is the yearly light art festival GLOW.

Eindhoven has been known for centuries as ‘The City of Lights’: for a long time it was the largest producer in the Netherlands of matches, and then Philips kicked in with the industrial production of incandescent light bulbs. Ib one way or another the city has always had something to do with light! To appreciate this characteristic element the best way is to enjoy the GLOW festival, which takes the form of countless outdoor exhibitions and shows, hosted in some of the most iconic buildings as well as along the banks of the Dommel, the city river.

  • A view inside of the Philips stadium at a match of PSV Eindhoven

Watch a match of the PSV Eindhoven in the PSV Stadium

The PSV Stadium is an impressive construction in the centre of Eindhoven and it is the home ground of the PSV, the local football club. Dutches are a proud folk and soccer is one of the things they stick their chest out for. Eindhoven people are no exception and a visit to the stadium, or - even better - going to a game of the city team and cheering together with the locals is the way to blend in.

Want to score some of the PSV merch? The stadium has a shop which you can combine with the PSV museum. Or alternatively in the city center near the market square they have a PSV Fan Store.

    You are expertly looked after!!

"You are expertly looked after!! Elleke will meet you at a location of your choice whether it be your hotel or at a bike rental shop (VeloRent is very good!) and then she takes you on a 2.5 hour whistlestop tour of Eindhoven where you see all the best bits and she does ask you if there’s anything in particular you want to see. The Philips family is very dominant in this town and we see the factories where they used to produce things which have now been turned into other workspaces. Plus the houses that were built for the Philips workers, the PSV stadium, art installations in parks etc We ran overtime by half an hour as we had a leisurely coffee and a nice chat! Recommended! "

    Nice bike ride

"We had a great time exploring Eindhoven with Elleke. Some interesting places and lots of green space. Only downside was the bike tour was described as “with a picnic “. Half way round Elleke told us this was wrong there was no picnic and the withlocals site needs corrected. It would have been good to know this in advance."

"The bike tour was a really enjoyable Experience. Elleke was a very friendly and open host. During the bike tour she showed me a couple of excentric places in Eindhoven. Discovering Eindhoven like a local!

"Our first ever visit to Eindhoven and it quickly became clear that if we really wanted to see the city properly, it had to be done by bike. A quick Google search brought up Elleke's details and it was apparent straight away that she could offer us just the sort of tour we wanted, tailored to our interests, but without having to pay a fortune. Elleke was very quick to respond to our request and confirm when she could do the tour. She was also able to offer recommendations for bike hire (although we ended up going somewhere recommended by our hotel as we were keen to try out e-bikes). As to the tour itself, Elleke clearly knew a great deal about Eindhoven - even though she joked that she was still a newcomer, having only lived in the city since the 1990s! Everything was done at our pace. If we wanted to spend more time somewhere, that was absolutely fine. She was very flexible - offering ideas and suggesting where we might go but happy to adapt to what we wanted. This was no box ticking, fixed price, typical tourist route experience. Our tour lasted 2 1/2 hours but we were still keen to explore a little more (and make the most of our day's bike hire) so Elleke recommended a route along one of the canals and took us to the starting point, really going out of her way to help us. My husband and I would absolutely 100% recommend Elleke to anyone who wants to find out a little more about this lovely city and do it the local's way - by bike!"

Very nice tour - despite the cold weather!

"I have enjoyed very much my Eindhoven bicycle tour, discovering old and new aspects of an evolving city. Visit of the circular economy warehouse and the biological farm was enlightening as learning about the first short-wave radio transmission by Kgn Wilhelmina in 1927. Dank U weel!"

    Great city tour

"Was great to get this personalized tour. Although Eindhoven is know for it's design and industrial sites it was really nice to see bits and pieces of the old historical character. Never knew Eindhoven had so much textile factories. Next to getting a more historic feel for the city it was really nice to visit some nice places to grab a local snack and beer. Thanks so much Reinoud (and Erik)! was really nice!"
