"We are very well traveled as a couple. South Africa has been on my wife and I’s bucket list for a very long time. Our main objective was to take a South African safari. However, we didn’t want to just land in Johannesburg and not experience the culture and the people of this magical city. We were celebrating my wife’s 65th birthday and didn’t have a lot of time to spend in Johannesburg before we traveled to Skukuza. We booked a quote hidden gems“ tour on the With-locals app we chose Lunga for his fabulous smile, and after reading his bio on the app, we knew he was the guide for us. The first night we were in Johannesburg we sat at the bar in our hotel and had a friendly conversation with our bartender. We told him that we were going into downtown Johannesburg with a local guide the next day and he told us that we were crazy. He told us that it was way too dangerous and even the driver who took us to meet Lunga was worried about us. At the drop off point, we were greeted by Luca and his buddy Thabo. Both young men were so incredibly friendly and passionate about the city of Johannesburg. My wife was extremely nervous. However, Lyon took her aside and made her feel completely comfortable and safe. We ate local food and drink local beer with them and shopped in local artisan boutique hotels that help support the rebuilding of the infrastructure of downtown Johannesburg. We walked The Street with the two young men and chatted the afternoon away learning so much about their culture and answering questions about ours in the US. I am here to tell my fellow Americans that Johannesburg and Soweto or an experience that if you have reservations about visiting this area, please don’t!
