"There's nothing I can say about Maria João besides the highest praises and that anyone with an interest in Portuguese wines and ports must meet her! Maria João's expertise from her careers in port and wine production, fine dining, menu development, and cooking all are demonstrated in her wine and port tasting.
Maria João first had us meet her at a very old grocery shop that she explained was frequented by 3 generations of her family! This shop felt like the real deal, local business that is intended for the locals, especially compared to the Bolhão Market that was full of tourists like ourselves.
At this beautiful shop, we tasted 3 different styles of port. We have port pretty regularly back in US, but wasn't very knowledgeable about the differences between each type, how to best enjoy them, and how to read the labels.
Next, she took us to a local, artisanal jams and preserves shop that we loved and wanted to buy to take back home with us. At this shop, Maria João showed us 6 wines and explained the origin, producer, and qualities of each bottle. The breadth of the variety and characteristics across the 6 bottles were so interesting and fun to explore. She even let us take one of our favorite bottles with us, as a parting gift! She also shared recommendations for the rest of our time in Porto.
Maria João is truly an expert in her field and her tastings are an absolute MUST for anyone who wants to learn about and taste the best of Portugal."
