"I have wanted to visit Herculaneum for some years, and finally got there this year, combining it with a visit to Pompeii. Firstly, I would say a visit to either place WITH a guide is a hugely enriching experience - I honestly do not know how I would have made any real sense of a visit without a guide. It would be an almost impossible job. So, Raffaele was my guide, and I asked him what motivated him to become an archeologist - and he answered "Seeing Jurassic Park as a young boy". That says it all!! Raffaele was very warm and personable, extremely knowledgeable on the complex nature of the Herculaneum site, and on the nature of the particular disaster it suffered and how it differed in major ways from what happened at Pompeii (no spoilers here!)
