The History of Parisian Pastry

Reviews from guests about our tours and locals
"I spent a full day exploring Paris's 3rd, 4th, and 5th arrondissements with Isabel, and it was one of the highlights of my trip. Her knowledge of Parisian history, architecture, and local culture was impressive, but what made the experience truly special was her ability to bring the city to life through fascinating stories and hidden details that I would never have discovered on my own. The tour was well-paced, thoughtfully planned, and covered a wonderful mix of iconic landmarks, charming streets, historic sites, and local gems. Isabel was engaging, approachable, and happy to answer questions, making the experience feel more like exploring Paris with a knowledgeable friend than being on a formal tour. If you're looking for a deeper understanding of Paris beyond the usual tourist attractions, I highly recommend a tour with Isabel. A fantastic day and excellent value for anyone who loves history, culture, and walking through one of the world's most beautiful cities."
"Our experience on The 10 Tastings of Paris: Saint-Germain tour with Paolo was absolutely wonderful. From the very beginning, his passion for Paris was evident, and his knowledge brought the neighborhood to life in a way that made the tour truly special. Paolo has a fabulous flair for food, art, architecture, and history, and he seamlessly combined all of these elements throughout our walk in the 6th arrondissement. Each tasting was thoughtfully selected, and his stories and insights added so much depth and context to the experience. What we especially appreciated was how openly Paolo shared aspects of French culture and everyday life. His enthusiasm and genuine love for the city made every stop engaging and memorable. We felt like we were exploring Paris with a knowledgeable local friend rather than simply taking a tour. If you're looking for an experience that blends outstanding food with fascinating history, beautiful architecture, and authentic cultural insights, Paolo is the perfect guide. We highly recommend this tour and would gladly book another experience with him."

Experience the French 'goûter,' a cherished afternoon snack tradition. Around 4 PM, Parisians pause for a sweet treat, often a delicious pastry like a pain au chocolat from their local boulangerie.
The macaron, a symbol of Parisian pastry elegance, has a long history. These delicate almond meringue cookies were perfected in the 20th century by Ladurée, who first sandwiched them with ganache.
Meet Marie-Antoine Carême, a pioneer of French pastry in the 19th century. He was famous for his elaborate confectionery creations, elevating pastry from a simple treat to a true art form.
The éclair, meaning 'flash of lightning' in French, is a classic choux pastry filled with cream and topped with icing. It is said to be named for being eaten in a flash! A must-try on any pastry tour.

"Maxime was great! Very courteous, very knowledgeable, considerate and engaging. The tour itself was disappointing. We had eight people on our tour and when you try to divide up a small brioche eight ways and have everyone touching the same food it’s not very appealing. Also had eight people sharing a small dessert and touching the food. I did a food tour in Lecce, Italy, and everyone had their own portion of food and it wasn’t shared by eight different people touching the food. But the cheese stop, they made a mistake and gave six portions of the five cheeses. Maxime had to take a knife and divide it up so each of us would have enough cheese. For the price we paid. I did not think it was a good value. But that should take nothing away from our tour guide. He was very very nice. I guess it’s just the way your tour is, compared to other food tours we’ve been on. "
"We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Oliva. She was knowledgeable about the area and had rapport with the locals in the establishments we visited. This was a great opportunity for my kids to try some new foods. My daughter discovered a new love for Quiche Lorraine and the crepes that we ended with were incredible. It was a good mix of savory and sweet, food, and beverage, with time to sit and rest at some of the stops. She also shared just the right amount of info about the culture, history and art of the area. Highly recommend."
"Iza took us on a delightful and diverse food tour in Paris. She was flexible and we appreciated that she didn’t focus on just one type of food or even just food. We also discussed Paris history, neighborhoods, churches, important cultural sites, which made the experience feel more immersive. And in doing so, got to try a wide variety of Parisian foods, from the city’s oldest chocolatier to savory galettes and French cheese from a local market. Highly recommend her for her knowledge and friendliness. "
"We had the best tour with Paolo! It was myself, my husband and two children, aged 7 and 10. He was very sweet and accommodating for all of us, especially given my son’s food allergies. He took us to some amazing food spots, and also other interesting stores that I would’ve never found if I have been looking on my own. He’s also a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the history of Paris and current events. I would highly recommend him, and when we come back to Paris, we hope to look him up again and book another tour. "
"Paolo and his food tour were two of the highlights of our time in Paris! We were a three generation group of 5 and everyone loved the places we stopped and Paolo’s knowledge, wit, and helpfulness. He answered all our questions and guided us through the Saint Germain neighborhood so we felt like locals. I cannot recommend Paolo and this tour option enough- we'll definitely do it again in a different neighborhood on our next trip!"
"We had a wonderful time with Gelsomina (“G”) on our food tour of Paris. It’s so nice to taste and learn the local food culture from a fellow foody who not only loves to eat good food but who also loves to cook. Even though G’s primary responsibility was to give us the food tour, she provided so much more detail about the local culture which is so helpful from an American perspective. G was a very warm and welcoming guide which I would highly recommend. It was our first time to Paris but we’ll be back again soon to learn more and hopefully Gelsomina will be available to be our personal guide. "
"Gelsomina is by far the best food tour guide we have had to date. Her kind demeanor was evident right from the get go when she helped us navigate the metro to our meeting point. The classic Parisian food we had was so amazingly delicious (crepes, quiche, pastries, oysters, escargot, cheese, wine, etc) - we could not have asked for a better first experience of true Paris cuisine. Throughout the tour, Gelsomina provided wonderful historical, social or current event insight; really providing a sense of the culture of the area. She also offered us several options to navigate through the city to fit in our must see spots for our one day trip. We could not recommend Gelsomina enough. You would be missing out to book any other guide. 15 out of 10 stars!"
"Gelsomina was an outstanding tour guide. Her explanations of the food and its history were remarkable, and she was extremely knowledgeable. The foods we tasted were all delicious—I honestly can’t pick a favorite. Gelsomina made the experience feel as though we were exploring with a great friend. Her warmth, expertise, and enthusiasm made the tour truly memorable. Highly recommended"
