Nothing says Sydney like the famous sails of the city’s UNESCO protected opera house. Luckily this architectural hotspot and the nearby Harbour Bridge are set next to the sparkling blue waters of one of the world’s most beautiful natural harbors.

Sit on the Opera House’s famous steps, enjoy a drink at the nearby Opera Bar or take a stroll across the bridge to North Sydney. However, you choose to enjoy these stunning landmarks just be sure they are on your list!

This leafy tree-lined street runs all the way from the city center to Bondi Junction so there are plenty of options for those looking to treat themselves.

    3. Escape the city on a day trip to the Blue Mountains

Although not actually blue, this national park to the west of Sydney gets its name from the haze which appears blue at a distance. Regardless of the color, Blue Mountains National Park is a paradise for those looking to get back to nature. Stroll through the eucalyptus forests, climb the rugged cliffs, hike to waterfalls or simply relax and take in the area’s hazy view. However, you want to explore this rugged terrain the national park will leave you spoilt for choice.

Local tipBlue Mountains National Park is easy to access by public transport. Just catch one of the trains to Katoomba which departs regularly from the city’s Central Station.

  • Dumplings in a box

    4. Try exotic Asian flavors in China Town

Sydney is a melting pot of cultures and that is apparent in its cuisine. With plenty of delicious Asian flavors to try, head to the city’s centrally-located China Town for some exotic and authentic bites. From cool restaurants offering the perfect mix of dim sum dishes and tasty stir-fried noodles to authentic Asian supermarkets filled with interesting and tropical snacks. You’ll find this district to be full of cool bites to delight all your senses.

Local tipHead to the restaurant in Chinatown’s mall on a Sunday for tasty and affordable dim sum.

  • People taking a stroll next to the Australian coast

    5. Take a walk along the rugged coast

Sydney’s close proximity to the ocean is one of its major draws and there is no better way to explore the scenery than on one of the city’s many coastal walks. With rugged cliff faces and rushing tides, the natural surroundings are sure to take your breath away. The most popular coastal walk is the Bondi to Coogee trail, but there are plenty more options open to you. If you are after an easy stroll you can’t fo wrong with the South Head Heritage Trail, or if you have more time to spend discover secret beaches on the Manly to Spit walk.

Local tipMay to November is the whale migration season in Sydney. So if you are taking a coastal stroll during this time keep your eyes peeled and you may get lucky.

  • A local guide giving a group of tourist explanation at a street art murial

    6. Discover Sydney’s street art in alternative New Town

Colorful, vibrant, and eclectic, Sydney’s inner west suburb of New Town has a distinct character that delights locals from all walks of life. With a thriving craft beer scene thanks in large part to the local brewery Young Henrys and an abundance of individual boutiques, this neighborhood is the perfect funky neighborhood to hang out in. With such an arty vibe it should come as no surprise that New Town is full of cool street art. Wander through the districts bohemian streets and take in its many, many stunning murals.

Local tipWatch the world go by with a refreshing beer in hand from the top floor balcony of the New Town hotel.

  • Australian hotel front

    7. Explore Sydney’s history in the city's oldest neighborhood

Sydney’s The Rocks neighborhood is perfect for history-loving travelers looking for cool and unusual things to do. In the area’s charmingly crooked cobblestone streets, you’ll find traditional Australian hotels, cool museums, and stunning harbor views. Weave your way through the narrow streets and discover cool one-of-a-kind stores. Plus the area’s market which takes place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is the perfect place to pick up a souvenir or two.

  • Colorful boat going under the Harbor Bridge

    8. Take a ferry ride from Circular Quay

Sydney harbor is really just as good if not better than the pictures would have you believe. Want to know the best and cheapest way to see it? Take a ferry from Circular Quay and enjoy panoramic views of one of the world’s most beautiful natural harbors. Not sure which ferry to take? Why not take the 30-minute ride over to the beach-side suburb of Manly? With laid-back Aussie vibes and surfers riding waves at all hours of the day, you’ll feel like you are a million miles away from the busy city center.

  • Two ladies walking on a beach with bags

    9. Relax on one of the city’s secret beaches

Sydney’s close proximity to the coast is a major draw for many travelers. With well over 100 beaches ranging in size and popularity, you really are spoilt for choice. Blend in with the locals as you spend a day full of sun, sea, and sand on one of the city’s lesser-known beaches. If you want to swim in the ocean head to the small eastern suburb of Clovelly. Here the rocks form a channel in front of the sandy beach which is perfect for a casual swim. For those that want to spend a whole day with the sand between their toes, Freshwater beach has sand and surf without the crowds.

Local tipIf you want a beach with a view, Milk Beach has a cool view of the Harbour Bridge.

  • Ghost standing in an abandoned hallway

    10. Go on a ghost tour in North Head Quarantine Station

On the northern beaches close to Manly you’ll find Q Station. This is a heritage-listed former quarantine station where people suspected of carrying diseases were held before being allowed to enter Sydney. Many of Q Station’s former occupants didn’t make it out alive and so the station is said to be haunted with their spirits. Take a ghost tour of this eerie spot or if you are really brave you can stay overnight in the hospital.

    Great way to see Sydney!

"We had a great time exploring Sydney with Robyn. Due to some travel mishaps we ended up scheduling pretty last minute, and she still took care to customize our tour and make sure we saw the parts of Sydney we hadn't seen yet. We loved the interesting historical context she provided and had a great time exploring The Rocks. We would have missed out on some of the most interesting parts of Sydney had it not been for our time with Robyn!"

The Day We Stopped Being Tourists

"This tour was truly exceptional from start to finish, and Matt is an outstanding guide in every sense of the word. From the moment we met him, we felt genuinely welcomed and *special* not like just another booking on a schedule, but like family. Matt’s personal touches made the day unforgettable. The champagne and chocolates were such a thoughtful surprise and added a touch of luxury that we never expected. His warmth, humor, and easygoing personality gave us 'tons of laughs' throughout the day, making the experience feel relaxed, fun, and incredibly personal. The views were absolutely breathtaking, the kind that stop you in your tracks, and Matt knew exactly where to go and when to be there. Every stop felt perfectly chosen and flawlessly executed. The most unforgettable moments were with the wildlife, especially the koala. Being able to experience them up close in such a respectful and meaningful way was something we will treasure forever. This wasn’t just a tour, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with joy, beauty, and genuine connection personally tailored to our interests. One of the things that truly set this tour apart was Matt’s local knowledge. He took us to lesser-known spots we never would have found on our own, places that felt untouched, authentic, and incredibly special. These hidden gems, away from the crowds, gave us a deeper connection to the area and made us feel like we were seeing the country through the eyes of a local, not a tourist. It’s clear this is something only someone who truly knows and loves the region could offer. We cannot recommend Matt highly enough. If you’re lucky enough to book a tour with him, you’re in for something truly special and uniquely Australian. 🐨✨"

    An excellent tour with Robyn!

"We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Robyn. She shared with us a wealth of knowledge about Sydney and its history, she showed us all the major highlights of the city, but also the hidden gems that we would never have found on our own. Robyn is interesting and informative, as well as personable and pleasant to be with. "

    Fabulous Food Tour

"Robyn filled our minds with history, culture and community and our tummies with a melting pot of ethnic specialties! One of the best food tours we've ever done and we've traveled extensively. Go hungry because it was plenty of food, we didn't eat breakfast, our tour was at 9 am and we were still full at dinnertime!"

    10 Tasty Tastings

"We had an amazing 10 tastings tour with Robyn. She was so warm and friendly and made us feel like family. She did a great job communicating before the tour and was so knowledgeable balancing our food tour with stories about the food and the history of Sydney. We tried some unique and delicious foods and had so much to eat we could hardly finish the last few tastings. It was the highlight of our time in Sydney and I can’t recommend her enough. I’m still dreaming of the Tokyo Tacos and wish I didn’t have to cross an entire ocean to eat them again. "

    Fantastic Experience

"We had a wonderful time getting to know Robyn and Australian culture. She took us to some great unforgettable gems of Sydney. We did the 7hr walking tour and Robyn went at our pace. She did frequent check-ins with my us. The food she introduced to us was also very delicious. Such a great experience for us."

    BOOK IT!!!

"My son, Noah(17) , and I had an 8 hour layover in Sydney. We decided to book the food tour with Robyn and are so glad we did. Robyn was an absolute gem! Her knowledge was so extensive on food, history and literally anything else we asked. She was extremely pleasant and fun to spend the day with. The curated food stops were just amazing. Sydney is a city that is a melting pot of all different cultures and we were really able to see and taste that along our tour. My only regret is I didn’t do this tour during the beginning of my trip so I could have gone back to some of these hidden gems. I consider myself a foodie, and I searched extensively for places to eat on our trip and I didn’t find any of these spots. I highly suggest you book and like I said at the start so you can visit the spots again! Thank you Robyn!!!"

    Dissapointing

"We have had so many wonderful Tours With Locals, our tour with Chris was a little disappointing. Starting time was moved to 8:30 (which we agreed to). The North Sydney harbor front was a nice stroll & great views of the city across the bay. Took the train over to the city. A lot of back streets with not many hidden gems. Chris had a previous appointment, so our tour was only about 2 hours. I count on honest reviews. This is an honest one."

    Great Foodie Tour with Robyn

"My wife and I were in Sydney for a few days and decided to take a Foodie Tour. I had communicated with Robyn and she agreed to pick us up at our hotel. The Foodie Tour was in Newtown. Robyn was very knowledgable and personable. She was a wonderful guide. We had a great time. The food was excellent and Robyn knew some of the people who worked in the restaurants. So, we had a chance to get to speak and learn about their business. I can't say enough about how Robyn made this a wonderful tour to remember."
