Here’s an overview of your activity

If you’re looking for a way to keep yourself active while also avoiding the crowds and keeping a social distance, why not a bike ride with a local expert who knows the backroads, nooks and crannies, and their stories? So, grab a bike, helmet and high visibility vest and follow me along the backroads, through historic towns, villages, parks and waterways, away from the crowds, in a relaxing but energising cycle at your pace.

So long as you are in good health, are reasonably fit and comfortable cycling on the road, all levels of experience and expertise are welcome. As a certified ride leader familiar with the route, your safety will be paramount at all times and all the appropriate cycling protocols will be adhered to. Bikes, helmet and high visibility vests will be provided, and at the start you will be given a safety briefing and an outline of what to expect.

I also want to assure you that we will follow safety protocols as per local guidelines and best practice. All bikes and equipment provided are checked and cleaned before and after each tour. My goal is to make you feel comfortable while having fun and by following the regulations in place.

This is a full day excursion. Your host will meet you at the train station, from where you'll take a short train ride to a picturesque village just outside Dublin. Here, you will pick up your bikes and safety gear. As this is a private tour, the total duration and distance are flexible from 3 to 5 hours, before returning by train to the city.

So why wait? Get on yer bike and join me on an energizing and memorable bike ride that you may never have realized was on your doorstep!

Your itinerary

  • Meeting point

    Butlers Chocolate Café, Heuston Station
  • Village of Sallins

Our bike tour begins in this quaint, historic village of Sallins just past the boundary of county Dublin in the county of Kildare. Here you will pick up your bike and safety equipment, and receive a short brief on what lies ahead. Your journey begins along the newly opened purpose build canal greenway, where you can enjoy a traffic free leisurely jaunt in the open air.
  • Grand Canal Greenway

Built in the second half of the 18th century, at 82 miles / 132km, the grand canal is Ireland's second longest. Originally a transport link from the pre railway era, for passengers and goods alike, today it has been repurposed as a dedicated pedestrian and bike route, where the public can enjoy the outdoors at their leisure in a safe, traffic free environment. This greenway forms the basis of this bike tour in an historic and scenic countryside.
  • Malt to Vault Exhibit and Cafe

Choose to stop off at the hidden gem hat it the local community run Malt to Vault exhibit, that traces the story of Arthur Guinness, as well as some of the ancient history in which this locally is steeped. You can also choose to nip next door for a refreshment at the wonderful Arhur's Cafe
  • Snack (optional)

Stop off at the wonderful Cliif at Lyons on the Grand Canal in its beautifully preserved 19th century surrounds
  • Celbridge

Swing by the mysterious manor and discover its connection with Jonathan Swift, a secret love story and the origin of the name Vanessa!
  • Castletown House and Estate

Pedal through the grounds of this 18th century Palladian house
  • Oughterard Church and Cemetery

6th century round tower, medieval church, resting place of Arthur Guinness and his family, scene of a gun duel involving Daniel O'Connell, and a panoramic vista of Kildare, Dublin and beyond
  • Historic village of Kill

Deviating from the canal, follow quiet country roads and cycle paths via another historic village that takes its name from the Irish "An Chill" which means church. This is the our final stop for a brief history before continuing our journey back to Sallins
